Yesenia Hernandez
Nursing
Yesenia Hernandez was drawn to Delaware Tech's exceptional nursing program and affordable tuition as an in-state resident. Yesenia chose nursing as her career path because she wanted to make a difference and advocate for those who aren't able to do so for themselves. "Nursing gives you the opportunity to help people at their most vulnerable and unexpected time of their lives."
As a teen mom, Yesenia graduated high school early and began taking college classes at 17 years old. She officially returned to Delaware Tech in 2019 to finish her associate degree in nursing.
Throughout her academic career, Yesenia has learned patience and perseverance. "College during COVID taught me flexibility. Things can change last minute and you have to be ready to adapt."
When asked which female employees she considered inspirational mentors and integral to her success, Yesenia couldn't choose just one. "Melissa Ouellette, Kathy Smith, Christi Mench, and Dee Lougheed. Thank you for all your support throughout my semesters and for continuing to push me."
Yesenia’s advice for prospective students is to always use their resources. "Someone is always willing to help if you put yourself out there. Make connections with your instructors and connect with your peers."
Following graduation, Yesenia plans to begin her nursing residency at ChristianaCare while working towards her bachelor’s degree at Delaware Tech.
